The Muller Lab Research Program investigates the cell signaling pathway that mediates PDE1 actions in the myocardium. Using animal models (mouse and guinea pig), primary and cultured heart cells, biochemical assays, and state-of-the-art Forster resonance energy transfer (FRET) imaging techniques, we are examining: -Upstream complexes that contribute to PDE1 localization -Downstream proteins that mediate PDE1 signaling -The compartmentalized nature of PDE1 signaling -What happens in the setting of heart disease? Because PDE1 inhibitors are also under evaluation for cancer and neurodegenerative diseases, our mechanistic findings are also likely to advance the understanding and treatment of these diseases. Assessed and characterized the biomechanical behavior of mice skin with Transglutaminase two gene Knockout Vs. Wild Type. The ECM collagen content, skin tensile strength profile, and collagen contraction assay results are shown. This is the first time TG2-null mice skin has been characterized by its tensile strength properties and collagen content in the dermis compared to the available literature. As translationally relevant, the results obtained can be further taken into consideration with the molecular mechanism that underlies fibroblast mechanoactivation by matrix stiffness which R. Wells et al. stated as playing a crucial role in tissue fibrosis. Developed qualitative and quantitative research skills through data collection, analysis and critically interpretation.Technique’s employ was the following: Scanning Electron Microscopy, Western Blot, Aseptic Cell Culture, Picrosirius Red Staining, Tensile Stress Test (Instron Machine). Data visualization was made using Excel and Graph Pad Prism. Show less

Learned how to do case presentation and while in the operation room, I learned parts of the Gross Anatomy of the head and neck that were important for extracting the Thyroid Gland. Learned about importance of nerves and blood vessels for the removal of an organ and the consequences of damaging an artery or a nerve during surgery. The experience taught me the importance of precision in medicine and the importance of developing fine motor skills.
