While serving tables may not exactly be experience in the advertising industry, I argue that it is a microcosm of the efforts. First, I try to discern whom I'm dealing with--whether it be a quiet dinner for two or a group of colleagues celebrating a recent triumph. I alter my angle as needed and cater to either group in the best effort to suit their desires. I make the connection through an understanding of how these guests would like to be treated for the evening and how best to maximize their experience at the restaurant. I see my position as the intermediary between the guest/customer and the chefs--much like the role a Brand Manager fills between the sponsor of the communications and the creatives. In this role I must take specific attention to the stated desires of the customer and try to interpret those efficiently to the chefs/creatives/copywriters to return to them a wonderful presentation of what they had expressly desired. Deadlines are key in serving tables and time-management essential. Multi-tasking is a major component of the skill-set and prioritizing functions paramount. Attention to detail and a sincere desire to please the guests is where my skills in communication and organization combine to offer a genuine dining experience. A selfless philosophy for the greater good of the restaurant is also imperative in the success of operations at such a highly regarded restaurant as Reata, requiring strong teamwork skills and knowing when to take leadership and when to fill a more specific role.
