AmeriCorps VISTA

The United States AmeriCorps VISTA program aims to utilize the strengths of skilled volunteers in order to reduce poverty in America. My assignment was to serve Catholic Charities of the Archdiocese Dubuque in their Immigration Legal Services office, located in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. The goal was to implement the Catholic Charities USA 'New Americans & Family Strengthening' program in my hometown, in order to implement poverty reduction strategies and increase accessibility to legal services for immigrant and refugee families. As a bilingual VISTA, I was able to translate and manage phone calls for Spanish-speaking clients. During my time of service, Cedar Rapids was the epicenter of a derecho storm, an inland hurricane with over 140 mph winds, causing category 4 levels of damage. The majority of my term of service was dedicated to Disaster Response efforts:- Assisted in the planning and marketing of 5 food distribution events, recruiting and coordinating over 460 new volunteers and distributing over 400,000 lbs of food- Designed and prepared fliers in English and French for the United We March Forward event for African Immigrants & Refugees; assisted 67 attendees in filling out applications for direct assistance in the month of October

Marketing Department Intern

The Coe College Marketing Department reaches a large audience through the use of social media and mailers in order to showcase the wonderful aspects of the college. I was able to help in the redesign of the official college website and collaborate in content development for Twitter, Facebook, and Instagram posts. As a representative of Coe, I have been featured in numerous fliers, video advertisements, and interviews about the college. In this position, I also gained experience working in the Coe College Mail Room & Print Center on various marketing-related projects.

Tour Guide & Telecounselor

The Office of Admissions is responsible for outreach and recruitment of students to Coe College. I have worked as a tour guide, connecting personally with students and their families and giving detailed tours of campus (including during holiday breaks and weekend admissions events). I have also been a telecounselor and made calls for the admissions office and answered any questions prospective students and their families might have about Coe College. - Interviewer for Full-Tuition Scholarships to Coe College, working with staff and faculty to evaluate and recruit candidates for fully-funded enrollment- Training Manual Writer and Editor, establishing telecounselor protocol, phone etiquette, and providing an organized and detailed college program information packet for future student callers to use while speaking to families

Writing Center Consultant

The Coe Writing Center is the largest student-run writing center in the nation, specializing in providing assistance with brainstorming, revising, editing and formatting through conversation. Consultants are representatives of every major and minor area of study on campus and are qualified to help students with assignments for any course. - Writing Fellow for a First-Year Seminar in Health Psychology, providing one-on-one consultations with 12 students during their first year and teaching 50 minute lectures once a month on writing techniques, specifically APA Style and literature review.- On-Campus Research Coordinator for the 'Needs Assessment' project for first-year students, transforming the Writing Fellows Program and implementing a more personalized approach to increase return rate of freshmen to the writing center.- Head of the Morale Committee, leading employee appreciation efforts through weekly "consultant of the week" recognition, passive programming in the workplace, and planning the end-of-the-year banquet."The Coe Writing Center is available to help anyone with any piece of writing at any stage of the writing process!"

I had the honor of assisting the start-up of the Bilingualism & Memory Lab of Dr. Renee M. Penalver at Coe College. My team and I conducted cognitive research with monolingual and bilingual subjects to see the effects of incidental learning on source memory.- Lead Research Assistant for Summer 2018, leading group meetings, establishing project deadlines and monitoring progress reports, assisted in the IRB and grant writing process- Presented my research numerous times at various local and national conferences, including the Midwestern Psychological Association conference in Chicago

In the summer of 2019, I had the opportunity to work at the Princeton Neuroscience Institute in the Computational Memory Lab of Dr. Kenneth Norman, under the mentorship of postdoc, Silvy Collin, PhD. The project focused on learning event schemas in blocked vs. interleaved study.- Member of The Leadership Alliance and gave an oral presentation about my research at the National Leadership Alliance Symposium- Presented at the Princeton Summer Intern Poster SessionThis internship was funded by an NSF REU Grant.
