As an intern at Indian Health, I designed data collection tools to evaluate food assistance and nutrition education programs, and analyzed quantitative and qualitative data to measure food insecurity, diet quality, and mental health of food assistance program participants. While this experience taught me valuable technical skills, I also learned the importance of developing a relationship of trust with community members. Putting in the time, patience, and consistent communication necessary to build these relationships is gratifying to me and I hope it can be a part of my long-term career. Show less

Coordinated and taught health classes in Spanish to inform an at-risk immigrant population about cervical cancer prevention, and emergency preparedness. Selected culturally relevant strategies in the classes, including reading “fotonovelas” and sharing traditional foods, to help participants feel comfortable and engage in the learning process. Designed and administered pre- and post-surveys; results indicated an overall improvement in knowledge and intent to practice preventive health behaviors.
