"American Underworld" was a Discovery Channel miniseries that dared to bring viewers deeper into the heart of America's extreme criminal subcultures than any show before. My job was to find those subcultures, dig up the dirt, and then figure out how to get the host access into them. This included writing letters to incarcerated truck driver serial killers, contacting drug task forces in Tennessee, and tracking white supremacists through California. More typical production duties still applied – I still had to organize findings into well-crafted presentations, manage my research assignments, and coordinate with all other members of production. I co-founded and served as president of a co-ed handball team that's grown into a premiere program on the USHA collegiate circuit. In 2014, the men's team finished with a 3rd place national ranking (Division I), a member of the women's team became national champion, and the current team president won a sportsmanship award. The welcoming team culture I helped establish in year one has fostered club longevity, tournament success, and lasting friendships. Jun 2006 - Aug 2008
CTY is a three week summer camp for academically gifted children from around the world. As an RA, I established a supportive dorm life, organized daily and weekly activities for anywhere from 6 to 300 students and staff, and built close-knit communities out of students who arrived at camp not knowing a soul. CTY kids may grow up to run great companies, cure deadly diseases, and broker world peace. Intellect is vital. But so is the emotional and interpersonal bedrock I helped build through games, sports, stories, team builders, hall rules, meals, field trips, talent shows, disciplinary actions, conversations, and all the other moments – big and small – that go into a great summer camp. I also covered breaking news, such as the NIU Valentine's Day school shooting. My investigative journalism piece, about police breaking up a black fraternity party, was one of the most read pieces of the year. Show less
