During my summer internship at NEC Corporation in Minato, Tokyo; I had an opportunity to visit NEC production factories to observe the production of wireless network products as well as optical modules. Additionally, I attended various lab demonstrations, lectures and presentations from departments such as Radio/Microwave department, Smart Energy Solutions and Data Centre and had the opportunity to witness future technologies especially in the mobile area. As a final assignment, I was tasked with formulating a strategy for NEC to penetrate the African ICT market.

Network Implementation Technician (IP/Metro-Ethernet)

As a Network Implementation Technician for IP/TDM and Metro-Ethernet, my duties were to implement and activate various services on Telecom Namibia's core access network (IP/MPLS, TDM and Metro-Ethernet). This involved configuring, interconnecting, installing as well as performing maintenance, monitoring and fault resolution. Some of my main duties were:* Configuration, interconnection and installation of routing and switching services on Cisco, Juniper, RAD and Tellabs platforms* Configuring, testing and troubleshooting end-user equipment to provide VPN and Internet access services, for Telecom Namibia’s corporate clients* Monitoring, performing maintenance and fault resolution on Telecom Namibia's backhaul network (IP/MPLS, TDM, Metro-Ethernet)* Planning and designing interconnections of ISPs to Telecom Namibia's IP/MPLS and Metro-E backbone, Data Networking solutions for government ministries as well as Individual customers; project report writing* Backbone network migration and service upgrades (Achieved target of less than 5% customer outage* Providing 24/7 technical support (onsite and offsite) for troubleshooting and new link interconnections* Arranging co-location and data center services including rack/cabinet preparation, cable installations (power/ethernet/fiber), maintenance and inventory

Internship (IP/IT Services)

I had a one year internship in the Infinitum IP services department at Telecom Namibia. During this internship, my main tasks were:* Planning, configuring and installing VPN and Internet access services using Cisco technologies. * Provisioning Wi-Fi Internet access to several tourist accommodation establishments such as lodges, hotels and BnBs around Namibia using ADSL and WiMax technologies. * Organizing and providing data and internet connectivity for Telecom Namibia’s ICT Summits in Windhoek, Namibia. * Installing and updating software on new and old servers as well as mapping of network drives, joining of users to the domain, connecting network printers and attending to computer user problems.* Administrative tasks such as backing up of data to servers, installation of anti-virus software as well as backing up of user data (emails and documents)
