Using a customized and load balanced VPN in our AWS VPC, we were able to reliably capture, log, and process network traffic for users in a cost-efficient manner. This data was streamed from our VPN via AWS Kinesis to a serverless backend using Lambda that processed and stored data in RDS (Postgres) and ElastiCache (Redis). The data we collected was used to display categorized data usage in-app, on the web, and via generated reports emailed to users on a schedule of their choosing. Onward had several features that were interesting to work on, specifically the blocking feature that was successful in revoking network access to a user's chosen list of blocked services.
