From the beginning of last year, I have had the opportunity to work closely with over 15 students from Grade 7-12. I have helped them directly through tutoring them in varying subjects including, mathematics, science, literature, engineering, humanities and Japanese, and indirectly through helping them structure and organise their academic routine. By creatively constructing lesson plans, and continually progress tracking my students, I have aided myself in the long run as an aspiring doctor, helping me to efficiently construct and manage patient care and treatments. These individualised learning experiences have also equipped me with many valuable skills like the ability to adapt my teaching to unique learning conditions and styles, and the ability to deliver coherent feedback, which reflects the skillset required of a medical practitioner communication with patients and families. Whilst my experience at McDonald’s differs to my other experiences in the areas of science, medicine and academia, it still provided me with necessary skills that can be transferred to healthcare. As a crew member, I was required to develop my teamwork to synergise with colleagues to ensure all tasks were completed to a high standard and quickly. Later, as a crew trainer my responsibility shifted to help guide and train the new members, in not only their physical responsibilities, but also keeping them motivated and ensuring they felt safe and always respected. Additionally, the mass lunch rushes have provided me with firsthand experience on how to better manage my time and delicate tasks to meet the demands of a team, whilst also educating me on effective resource management – which are all applicable to the interdisciplinary field of healthcare.
