I completed my final placement at Armidale Client Services Centre -Department of Communities and Justice (DCJ) in June 2022. I have gained knowledge and experience how DCJ works with families in addressing social issues and support the vulnerable communities. I also got exposed to both Child Protection and Out of Home Care whilst being guided by the NSW Practice Framework and NSW Ethical Code of Conduct. I have also had a chance in assisting caseworkers in writing up case notes, home visits records, case plan reviews and updating case plans. My training at DCJ has also allowed me to be supporting caseworkers in helping different families and children from different cultural backgrounds. Lastly, my training at DCJ has equipped me with the skills to engage in complex problem solving whilst working collaboratively with other agencies to support parents, family members and children. I was also exposed to complex cases of individuals with disabilities and mental health issues. Therefore, I attained skills on how to communicate sensitively and engage effectively with families, allied health providers and communities in a way that fostered mutual respect and establish rapport with the clients. I completed my first social work field placement at Armidale Community Corrections, and I gained an understanding how Community Corrections Officers contribute the Department of Communities and Justice’s priority to reduce reoffending and maintain community safety. I also gained knowledge on how Community Corrections Officers provide professional advice and services including reports to courts, releasing authorities and other statutory bodies. I also acquired knowledge on how Community Corrections Officers provide professional case management and supervision of offenders on a community and custodial environment and how they link offenders to interventions and support services in the community. Most of the offenders were Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people, therefore I got a chance to understand the issues affecting Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people whilst identifying effective measures to deal with the presenting issues. I also gained an understanding of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander culture, values and beliefs. Show less
