The Project was initially founded as an emergency response due to excess mortality from lead poisoning in Zamfara state and the aim was to reduce excess mortality and morbidity associated with environmental lead contamination.Over time, the project developed into a broader pediatric program supporting the State Ministry of Health hospital in inpatient pediatric care and targeted community health activities to reduce the number of children admitted. The community activities also include OPD, Sexual and Reproductive Health, SGBV, Psychosocial Support for Internally Displaced Persons and Ambulatory feeding program in different locations in Zamfara State Show less

The Project aims to support Talata Mafara General Hospital to reduce morbidity and mortality associated with Severe Acute Malnutrition (SAM) by setting up a 30 bed Inpatient Therapeutic Feeding Centre (ITFC) and also support the Ambulatory Therapeutic Feeding Centre (ATFC) at the Orphanage and Less privileged Clinic (OLPC). The intervention includes; provision of essential medical supplies, technical and (para)medical trainings and token of financial support (incentives) and (one-off) structural rehabilitation.In contemplating sustainability, the intervention aims to support the Ministry of Health to take full clinical responsibility. ERU conducts surveillance and responds to public health issues associated with measles, meningitis, acute watery diarrhea, floods and consequences of violence (displacement, traumatic injuries).

The Project started in February 2018 due to consequences of violence - particularly internal displacement in Benue State. MSF supported two primary healthcare clinics in 2 camps (staff incentives, drugs and referrals to secondary/tertiary health care facilities), which also attend to surrounding communities, and provided OPD consultations, ANC/PNC, nutrition, health education, care for survivors of SGBV, together with community engagement and education. The provided water, sanitation, and health promotion activities, including installation of hand washing points for COVID prevention as well as triage of suspected COVID patients for referral to State Ministry of Health COVID centres. The overall objective of this project is to reduce morbidity and mortality among displaced population affected by conflict and other emergencies in Benue State Nigeria. Show less
