Classes taught: Year 7/8/9/10/12 English Year 9 Wellbeing In my first year as a teacher (2014), I was allocated a Year 12 English class. Although this proved to be challenging, I thrived off the pressure and ensured my students performed to the highest standard. Although I was new to the profession, the lack of age gap between myself and my class proved to be advantageous; having undertaken VCE less than 10 years before, the students’ expressed that they felt supported by someone who understood the challenges they were faced with. One of my students’ ended up being the dux of the school; however, I also had 8 learning support students in my Year 12 class who were receiving assistance from student services for either academic or emotional support. This meant that while maneuvering the demands of teaching Year 12 English, I was also required to seamlessly integrate and be mindful of students IEPs. At the conclusion of the year, every student received their first preference of tertiary study. In 2014 I was a Yr 9 homeroom teacher, requiring monitoring academic progression and dealing with matters of discipline, along with ensuring a high level of pastoral care to my students. Further, as a Yr 9 Homeroom teacher, I was involved in the creation and implementation of a homeroom and wellbeing program. This program involved sessions on bullying, safe partying, relationships, grief and anxiety, utilizing the principles of positive psychology. I created and ran the majority of these sessions myself, along with working closely with the other homeroom teachers and Year 9 co-ordinator. In July 2015, I presented at a wellbeing conference held by KDS. I spoke on “Anxious and depressed students in the classroom” and ran a workshop on practical strategies that teachers can implement in their own classrooms. The workshop was attended by teachers from many schools, and afterwards I was approached by outside teachers in regards to the potential for presenting at their schools. Show less
