My role as a placement student on a year long position from University was to gain industrial experience within the area of Sports Facility Construction and to further my knowledge from what I have learned from my studies. My projects included updating Industrial Standard documents for the Maintenance and Construction of Athletics Tracks, the Provision of Outdoor Sports Lighting and for the Supply, Installation and Maintenance of Outdoor Sports Ground Equipment. Another project of mine was the design and acceptance of a new Registration Scheme for all synthetic sports pitches and athletics tracks constructed and resurfaced by SAPCA’s Pitch and Track members. The aim of the initiative is to measure and ensure the quality of workmanship and high levels of construction required in the Sports Construction Industry.

A summer placement at Tata Steel enabled me to understand the steel making process from start to finish. The title of my project was 'Concast Slab Caster Segment Enhancements'. I supervised trial stages of pipework conversions on the slab caster, and tracked the construction of a new design zero segment. At the end of the placement I presented my findings to the working group and produced a technical report for the department.
