I have served two years as a student leader on the University of Minnesota Navigators leadership team and most recently had the privilege to work with Emma. I have seen student leaders of all ages and positions as they have served on the Navigators team, but Emma stands out as an individual that is intentional about her work for the benefit of those she serves. I witnessed Emma Peterson as she recruited students, built a small community on campus, established relationships, and even started important conversations with strangers about the topics that she is passionate about. In the beginning of the school year, I was able to recognize the way that Emma reached out to students and developed relationships with each individual that she contacted. Throughout the school year, I collaborated with her to lead a group of women in studying the Bible together and being present in each other’s lives. Emma worked for this team successfully by coming to meetings prepared with creative ideas and by paying attention to the needs of those that she worked with and those that she served. I witnessed her willingness to practice new skills that she was not initially comfortable with but was enthusiastic to improve. A few instances with Emma that show her commitment to the work that she does were times when she willingly took the leading role in our student group with minimal preparation. Emma was able to wisely use her little time to prepare for group meetings and she altered her work to fit the needs of her group. Additionally, I watched as Emma made women on campus more comfortable and confident in their faith both personally and working in group gatherings. Her passion for the topic was obvious in the attention and effort that she put into fulfilling her role as a student leader.
