I had the pleasure of working with Emma while she was at Bastion. Emma has a can-do attitude, dependable, and always goes above and beyond. While working with me, Emma helped on everything from content creation to research, building detailed SOPs, and overseeing the build-out of monthly social calendars, including writing copy and managing creative assets. It would be a pleasure to work with Emma again, and I highly recommend her as she would be a solid asset to any team.

To Whom It May Concern, I worked closely with Emma Kessner for four years as her teacher and mentor on a robotics team competing in the FIRST Technical Challenge. Throughout this time Emma exhibited exceptional leadership, superior organization, articulate communication and savvy marketing. In her senior year Emma was selected as captain for her robotics team, and she led them to a Regional Championship and a judged award at the World Championship in Houston. She achieved this success by fostering a positive, inclusive team environment and by her selfless dedication to every aspect of the competition. When Emma was named captain of her team, she put a lot of thought into making sure the season would be a positive experience for all members. She set a tone that everyone’s voice would be heard, and gave each member specific responsibilities so they felt ownership of their contributions. Emma deftly navigated potential conflicts and thoughtfully resolved a serious issue that enabled the team to partner with an LGBTQ+ affinity group. Emma regularly addressed her team in a motivational way, and she closed out the season with an inspiring speech that recognized all fifteen team members. To make sure she left a successful legacy, Emma also compiled a fifty page document with tips, advice, and a season timeline to assist future robotics captains. In the FIRST Tech Challenge, the engineering notebook is an important document that tells the story of the team’s journey throughout the season. Emma’s incredible organization helped take the team’s notebook to a championship winning level. She began by examining award winning notebooks, and then developed a unique format that was easy to navigate and clearly illustrated the team’s design process. She kept the fifteen team members punctual with their entries, and compiled and edited their work into a beautiful 300+ page document. This notebook will remain a testament to the team’s hard work and will serve as a model and reference for future teams. Emma firmly believed that her team is more than just robots, and she organized team outreach, sponsorships, and marketing that greatly enhanced the team’s impact in the larger community. She helped teach a computer coding class to a group of students with chronic illness, and she secured a sponsorship with the laser cutting company Glowforge for materials and discounts. Emma maintained an active online presence for the team, including a highly successful social media campaign before the World Championship. Emma also contributed a lot of content to the team’s new website, giving them a permanent platform on the web. At tournaments and outreach events, Emma was a great spokesperson who clearly articulated the team’s mission and advocated for underrepresented groups in STEM. Emma is a confident, proactive, and thoughtful leader who does not limit her skills and impact to just robotics. She is a worthy recipient of the Girl Scout’s Gold Award and also founded the St
