I have pursued every opportunity offered by Avon Archaeology Limited to broaden my skill set, enabling me to rise from Project Supervisor to Project Manager within a very short space of time. I now regularly take ownership of both fieldwork and research projects throughout their entire life cycle. Specialist skills which I have gained as part of this role include proficiency in 2D CAD (Draftsight and NanoCAD) to manipulate raw survey data, OS grid data and images in order to produce professional report illustrations. I also regularly train and supervise colleagues, volunteers and work experience students in the use of CAD and GPS, fieldwork and research techniques and post-excavation tasks. Show less

This was a part-time position with the German charity NGO Taxi, which I began during my year in South America and continued on a part-time basis upon returning to the UK, in addition to full-time archaeological employment. My role included proofreading, editing and updating of existing volunteer information packs and website content; researching content for and writing new volunteer information packs and website content; and identifying prospective business partners and organizations and subsequently initiating and cultivating productive professional relationships. This was frequently undertaken in Spanish. I also assisted the company director with some financial tasks, such as maintaining the company ledger and pricing new projects. These various work strands frequently ran in tandem, and so my ability to work on several projects at once, exercise good judgement in the prioritization of tasks, accurately predict each project’s time frame, and work to tight and often competing deadlines was hugely strengthened. I undertook one year of self-funded travel, for the most part as a solo traveller, throughout South America, passing through Colombia, Ecuador, Argentina, Peru, Bolivia and Chile. My exploration of the continent was interspersed with several volunteer roles with local businesses and charities. The mental and emotional challenges that the journey presented me with gave me even greater strength of character, a deeper insight into both my limitations and capabilities, and hugely strengthened my ability to rely on myself, adapt to change and build flourishing relationships with a huge range of people with a wide variety of cultural norms and values. Regular communication in Spanish also cemented my previous knowledge of the language, ultimately endowing me with an intermediate - advanced level of understanding; this is a skill that I continue maintaining and nurturing. During the trip I saw the effects of huge social and economic inequality and the legacy of the continent's colonial past, as well as the dichotomy between traditional and modern ways of life there. This had a profound effect on my social conscience and deepened my already well-established concern for global happiness and welfare. Show less

I participated in the long-running A1 widening scheme (A1L2B) in the north-east of England, and during my employment on the project was promoted to Assistant Supervisor. As part of this I was given professional jurisdiction over the excavation of a small area of the site of Cataractonium. *Please note: this period of employment was interrupted by my year's travel in South America (see below); however, I was reemployed on the project upon my return to the UK. My initial employment within the archaeological sector consisted of participation in a number of excavations spanning the Iron Age to Industrial periods throughout the UK. For all of these positions I was employed for the length of the excavation.
