In the 3rd year of my Chemical Engineering undergraduate degree, I completed 3 weeks of in-service training at Afrigen Biologics and Vaccines situated in Cape Town. During my time there I completed the following: • A report on a cold chain study where I explored the cold chain specifics for mRNA COVID-19 vaccine transportation to clinical trial sites. • A report on a tangential flow filtration buffer exchange where I carried out a mass balance to determine the residual ethanol % in the final drug substance. • Training through the International Vaccine Institute (IVI) on Good Documentation Practices (GDP), Good Laboratory Practice (GLP) and Good Manufacturing Practices (GMP) specifically looking at pharmaceutical quality systems and quality risk management as well as biosafety and biosecurity in a manufacturing setup. Through this experience I gained practical experience in applying what I have learned so far in my 3 years of study. I thoroughly enjoyed my time at Afrigen as their cutting edge research and involvement in the COVID-19 vaccines, created an exciting and stimulating environment which encouraged engagement and in-depth learning.
