  As an intern in the biology department I have conducted fieldwork on the River Gwash (Rutland) and the River Welland (Northamptonshire) in order to map the present biotopes and sample invertebrates. This research will prove that the rivers need improvement along the Water Framework Directive guidelines to improve their status. The research undertaken on the River Gwash has involved the reinstating of two old meander bends, which had silted up after the channel was artificially straightened about 40 years ago. By creating a more natural channel, including the digging of pools on meander bends and the formation of gravel riffles, the diversity of fish and invertebrates will increase. Show less
