somme is a collective of artists that work with biological materials, sensing performance suits / environments, and custom electronics. The collective consists of the artists Sam Bourgault, Owen Coolidge, Matthew Halpenny, Matthew Salaciak, and Emma Forgues. Their creation is tailored towards exploring issues of the technosphere, the materiality of virtual networks, human labor within information networks, bio-technologies, and pervasive surveillance. Each member brings a unique background to the collective that lets them operate between various fields of thought. Sam Bourgault: robotics, physics, & performance Owen Coolidge: electronics, computer vision, & imaging Matthew Halpenny: genetics, biological systems, & ICTs (information communication technologies) Matthew Salaciak: sound synthesis, hardware development, & data analysis Emma Forgues: robotics, video synthesis, & mapping They have created biological-kinetic sculptures and performances inspired by exhaustive network labour. Their work has been featured in Elektra XX, MIAN 2019, and Le Centre Pompidou. They were selected as the New Media Creation Grant Caisse Desjardins grant receipients for 2019 and are members of Milieux Institute for the Arts, Culture, & Technology. Show less
