Having started working at the O2 Academy, Newcastle (part of the Academy Music Group) in October 2015, I had gained a lot of experience of working behind a bar, and was subsequently promoted to a bar supervisor in February 2017. In addition to serving behind the bar, and carrying out many of the same tasks as bar staff, I had other roles. First and foremost, I was responsible for the welfare and work from the staff on the bar I was supervising, as well as the welfare of those attending the concert. I was also responsible for setting up the bar: arranging and putting up the optics on the back of the bar, putting all spirits and mixers out and ensuring the bar was representable. I was also given the task of collecting and counting the till for the bar.

This was a temporary job while studying at University. This gave me a chance to improve my work experience and widen my skill set to prepare me for a working role in the future. Roles involved mainly being behind the bars, serving draught, spirits/mixer beverages and other alcoholic and non-alcoholic drinks. I also had the opportunity to work in the cloakroom, on a small hot dog stand, or on the box office, as one of the first points of contact for customers. When I started, I had limited confidence, however this increased dramatically due to my increased ability to work well with and around various types of people, and adapt to a changing and fast paced environment, as well as developing my initiative and independence due to the varying situations I was faced with.

This summer, I had the opportunity to work at an engineering company, Wallwork Heat Treatment, working in the office doing admin and data entry tasks, whilst working on reception as well. Being my first role as a receptionist, when I started, this was a small challenge for me. However, through asking questions constantly and my own perseverance, I quickly got the hang of it and it soon became second nature. So much so, that I was able to step in and train a new receptionist who would take over from me when I returned to University in September. This role gave me the opportunity to improve my customer service and organisational skills, as being front of house receptionist meant I would be first to greet customers, and first to answer the phone regarding customer queries or problems. With responsibilities for admin and data entry, I also had to have a thorough understanding of the computer and IT system and be able to organise myself and the work well.

Similar to the previous year, I worked here over Summer as a temporary job whilst on break from University. My roles this year included inputting incoming goods into the Warehouse computer system, while checking they were organised and in correct boxes. I was also required to quality check many of these goods if they came into the warehouse in incorrect boxes and when they were disorganised. Furthermore, as I was able to easily pick up and understand the computer system, I often helped new starters and offered advice when other workers had technical problems. This was a good opportunity to further improve my confidence and people skills, as well as gain work experience and earn for myself.

This was a temporary job over Summer to add to my work experience while earning some money for the first time. Since this was the first 'proper' job I had, I was thrown in at the deep end in a way, which allowed my independence and confidence to increase massively, even just on the first day. My main role was working on quality checking as part of the internet department, where I would carefully, but swiftly, examine items such as trainers and clothes, for any faults, which would then be sent on to either internet or store sales. Since we had a target each day, it was required that I worked extremely fast while still being meticulous with the checking, otherwise there would be sanctions imposed. Another role I had toward the end was on the computers, checking every item had been inputted and registered correctly and placed into the right "cage" to be sent on to internet or store sales. Furthermore, the early mornings (6:30am start) meant I had to adapt quickly, as I had become accustomed to "student" hours, and I was able to manage this with ease.
