Shortly after being hired as an education reporter with the Rapid City Journal, my job shifted to the northern Black Hills region to work as an editor for one of the Journal's weekly publications, The Butte County Post. This job required staff management, payroll, creating weekly budgets and assignments, news and feature writing, sports coverage, photography, copy editing and working closely with Lee Enterprise's design team to present each week's newspaper. I was also able to contribute to two special sections throughout the summer, which included their Heritage Edition of manufacturing and agriculture as well as a special 4-H section. I also wrote stories for the women's magazine.

As the editor in chief I have the final say in every editorial and staff decision. I am the visionary for The Volante as a whole, and meet with all staff members to ensure they are developing and moving forward as storytellers. I also act as a liaison between the staff and the Publication Board and Cross Media Council, and am responsible for the recruitment committee. I oversees all other senior editors — news content, news design, verve, sports, opinion, multimedia and newsroom assistant, and make daily decisions affecting the newsroom deadlines and staff expectations. These decisions can include daily adjustments such as deadlines, story coverage, which photos to run, etc. I also read through stories on a daily basis and publish stories and photos to the website.
