My main work within this role is offering mental health support to students via one-to-one emotional well-being sessions. Within these sessions the students engage in talking therapy, art therapy and various mental health interventions. Outside of this my role also includes offering drop-in therapy sessions for students, facilitating groups and organising various mental health and wellbeing events.

I currently volunteer here offering 4 therapeutic hours a week, this enables me to gain valuable experience and placement hours. Within this organisation I give my time to the Leek campus offering counsellor/psychotherapy sessions to students at the college including adult learners. In this role I also complete all my own formative and continued assessments, risk assessments, contracting and note taking. Due to the college not having an onsite counsellor before hand I have helped the college to set-up their wellbeing process/service including helping to draft vital therapeutic documents and giving insight into how the process can work best.

I worked here as a part time member of staff before becoming a full time member of staff taking on an unofficial role as a Senior Sales Advisor. I worked here as a full time staff member for a year in between college and moving to university. My role involved working closely with customers in order to help them find the right product and advise them on what to purchase. This is where my confidence has really developed as an individual allowing me now to confidently engage and listen to individuals productively; a skill I have found useful in my education of counselling. I also would complete multiple administrative tasks such as cashing up the tills, being able to print and organise figures for concessions and delicate daily tasks amongst the team such as sorting stock and cleaning. Only left the job due to moving to a new area to study and have worked here again over the holiday period.

I took on this job over the summer time between studying for my degree. I have been invited back to work during the holidays due to working well within the team and picking up the skills and training quickly and efficiently. The job involved mainly working with parents/guardians and their children in order to provide the correct measurements and fitting of their shoes, particularly school shoes. This involved a lot of communication with young ones all the way to the elderly and allowed me to gain in confidence and interact with a multitude of people in a professional yet compassionate manner.

      • Jul 2013 - May 2014

During this role I worked as a cafe assistant and waitress in a popular garden centre restaurant. Being a waitress has allowed me to develop my skills in working under pressure and in sometimes stressful situations as it is a very fast paced environment. As my first job it allowed me to gain the foundation skills I have now such as being punctual, hard working and dedicated to the task in hand no matter how big or small. I partook in a range of jobs such as making drinks, taking orders, interacting with customers, waitressing and cleaning. Only left the job due to getting a new one in an area I was more interested in at the time.
