Katy Crow, MPA

I met Emily while we attended MPA courses at UMKC. I was lucky enough to work with her on a group project in our Capstone class. I find Emily to be an absolute delight. She is energetic, outgoing, confident and smart. When you are assigned to groups in college courses, you don't get a choice about who you are working with. I would gladly choose to work with Emily again any day. She had great ideas for our project, made positive contributions and stayed on task. We received an A on our final project and produced a practical deliverable which the non-profit could really use. Her leadership skills are top notch and I hope to have the chance to work with her again one day.

During my tenure at the Omaha Community Foundation, I thought of myself as a philanthropic matchmaker: connecting philanthropists with organizations and projects they care about most, and connecting philanthropists with each other to tackle community problems together. Developing and deepening relationships is the most important part of my job, and fortunately also my favorite. Giving is inherently personal, and it was an honor to support donors on their giving journey, all while helping to fulfill community needs. I also sat on the foundation's equity team. In this role, I helped facilitate staff-wide conversation and action around ensuring our hiring, training, and grant-making practices are accessible for all.

During my tenure at HFHO, I led the Omaha Gives fundraising campaign, raising $166K from 462 unique donors (87 new-to-Habitat!) in a 24-hour period. This put Habitat Omaha at the top of the leaderboard all day, coming in 2nd in terms of total funds raised and 5th for number of unique donors, out of 950 organizations. As Development Officer with Habitat of Humanity of Omaha, I worked to create and enhance relationships with individuals, corporations, foundations, and faith community partners. I ensured community members, supporters, and volunteers were strategically connected to the array of opportunities available to support Habitat's mission, as well as ensured all who came in contact with Habitat had a positive and meaningful experience. In addition to creating a robust donor prospecting and segmentation plan, I raised mid-sized to major gifts ($1K - $50K).

I credit so much of my development/fundraising journey to my time at the SAC Museum. Moving back to Omaha after many years in Missouri and Kansas felt a lot like starting my career over from scratch, and the Museum took a chance on me. As the development and membership associate, I worked to ensure a balanced mix of funding sources to meet the needs of the organization. I streamlined the grant writing process, maintained donor records, solicited and acknowledged donations, and developed relationships with members and potential members.

    • Community Development Specialist: Graduate Program Internship

During a ten week internship while completing my MPA, I worked directly with the Community Development Coordinator at the City of Leavenworth to manage and distribute Community Development Block Grants (CDBG) through the home repair and home ownership programs. By building relationships with rental property management companies, the local United States Penitentiary, the Fort Leavenworth Housing Office, and area nonprofit organizations that provide housing resources, I conducted a study to determine that there is not enough affordable housing available to meet the need of the low-income population. The analytical evidence I found, paired with previously collected anecdotal data, will be used to expand the low-income housing options in Leavenworth.

    • Associate Director of Chapter Services
      • Dec 2013 - May 2016

As Associate Director of Chapter Services, I supported the National Fraternity initiative of establishing and maintaining 500 healthy chapters by the year 2025 through the direct oversight of the Chapter Consultant Program.I worked directly with the Director of Chapter Services and the Executive Director to develop the Associate Director staff position and budget, including the procedures to recruit, train and mentor three traveling Chapter Consultants. I compiled and analyzed membership data to determine chapter health and responsiveness to programming. I developed a communication plan to share visit outputs and outcomes with key stakeholders, including the national Board of Directors, volunteer staff, chapter advisors and students. Additionally, with the Fraternity purchase of a newly integrated learning system, I created, edited, launched and evaluated online curriculum for member development.

    • Chapter Consultant
      • Jun 2012 - Dec 2013

As a Chapter Consultant, I interacted directly with 2,000 university students, 300 volunteer staff, and 75 campus administrators in order to positively promote the Alpha Phi Omega principles, recruit members, develop member leadership, and create specialized chapter programming. I created and facilitated thirteen in-person workshops for student members and advisors, including member recruitment, leadership development, retention, marketing and branding, engaging community partners and navigating national resources. Additionally, I provided executive leadership training to 450 chapter officers and facilitated strategic goal setting and evaluation sessions.
