Under Dr. Walter Bowyer's research lab, we studied the effects of estrogen mimics on Blacknose Dace fish in the Finger Lakes Region. Estrogen mimics are endocrine disruptors that can arise from pollution and replicate estrogen functions. For instance, in male fish, they cause ova to appear in the testis while in female fish, estrogen mimics overstimulate estrogen receptors. With levels of pollution steadily increasing, it is important to determine the effects of pollution, and in this case was done by comparing male reproductive organs of male Blacknose Dace fish that reside in watersheds that feed into Seneca Lake over multiple seasons.
