    • Patient Involvement Project Manager
      • Jun 2019 - Present

I'm currently part of a dynamic team working to connect people to health research. I spend half my time advising researchers at Manchester Biomedical Research Centre about how to make their research more inclusive and the other half of my time working across networks of patients and local communities, engaging with people who have lived experiences of different health conditions. I bring these groups together, through patient and public involvement and engagement (PPIE) activities, to help shape diagnosis, treatment and care and make translational research more relevant to patients.I have expertise in working with the d/Deaf community, people with respiratory conditions and cancer patients. See wearevocal.org for more information about the PPIE opportunities I am involved in.

    • Precision Medicine Project Manager
      • Jul 2016 - Sep 2018

As Project Manager I worked as part of a small team to develop CRUK's first precision medicine strategy to help drive forward progress in this exciting and innovative area of cancer research. This involved scoping the current landscape of precision medicine in the UK and internationally and discussing complex research themes with members of the clinical academic community, industry and pharma and other not-for-profit organisations. The precision medicine strategy created opportunities for CRUK to become world leading in this space.

    • Science Communication Manager
      • Apr 2013 - Jul 2016

Using my exceptional communication skills and background in biomedical research, I translated complex science into lay friendly communications to make CRUK's research accessible to people across the UK. I worked with fundraising teams, including the Create the Change campaign which raised £100 million for the building of the Francis Crick Institute. I am media trained and have acted as a media spokesperson for CRUK.

    • PhD student
      • Sep 2009 - Aug 2013

Before successfully completing my PhD I worked in the laboratory of Dr Tim Chico. My project involved using the chick embryo as a model of flow-induced blood vessel remodeling. I sought to identify the genes which contribute to the process of collateral vessel formation. I enjoyed working on a project which allowed me to experience both clinical and basic science research.

    • Biomedical Science Undergraduate module teaching assistant
      • 2010 - 2012

I assisted with the Biomedical Science Developmental Genetics module for three years. My job involved demonstrating dissection skills to students, and helping them to understand the process of chick embryo development. Complicated scientific concepts had to be adjusted to an appropriate level and often discussions and questions from the students required me to think on my feet.

    • European Molecular Biology Organisation course demonstrator

This experience required good organisational skills in order to prepare my practical demonstration and the ability to communicate my science to students from around the world.

    • Laboratory technician
      • Nov 2008 - Sep 2009

As a laboratory technician I was able to gain valuable experience for my PhD. Along with daily tasks to help with the running of the lab, I used the time to develop the model which became the focus of my PhD project.
