hilary otter
Emily was always a most interested and thorough student during the 5 years in which I taught her. She has a natural aptitude for science and a keen interest in many areas that went well beyond the confines of any exam specification. She has an extensive background knowledge gained from reading and the internet. She is highly articulate and writes beautifully, using clear, concise language in an unuasual and interesting way. Emily was highly motivated to succeed and was able to act effectively on any advice she was offered. Emily learns fast and is able to work effectively within a team as she enjoys good relations with both peers and others.

Emily is a keen and hard working individual. She has developed her organisational skills and can be left tasks to do unsupervised. I have left Emily and a collegue to run small events for me when we have had a number of events on the same day.

Freelance Script Writer
-
Sep 2015 - May 2017
SciShow is a science education YouTube channel with over 4.5 million subscribers. As a freelance script writer, I worked mainly with the US-based editorial team. I gave and received pitches for upcoming videos, and crafted scripts from 400-word Quick Questions to 2000-word list or in-depth Infusion pieces. I would often consult with academics along the way to check facts, source images and help me deepen my understanding of the topic at hand. On a semi-regular basis I would also take responsibility for writing the weekly News script. This had added time pressure and also involved sifting through upcoming (embargoed) press releases and journal articles to select the most intriguing and interesting ones for our audience. During the year-and-a-half I worked with SciShow, I wrote the script for nearly 50 videos on a delightfully broad range of topics, including mushroom clouds, bats, the Zika virus, cheese, beta-blockers, dinosaurs and more! Some examples: - What does your uvula do? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ncmUToEIpEA - Why don't sleeping bats fall down? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=n6RCxTK7geI - Metal vs Bacteria https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DjZ6b20LSoc Show less

Assistant Teacher
-
Sep 2011 - Sep 2016
During term-time, my role as Assistant Teacher was to act as lead demonstrator in all first year biochemistry labs, operate our online learning system eBioLabs in order to mark work, and act as subject tutor in Biochemistry as well. Outside of term-time, I took on various tasks in preparation for the upcoming academic year. This has so far included: • Developing teaching resources such as pre-lab quizzes, model answers for tutors, filming and editing educational videos • Developing and testing practicals for use in future academic years • Researching and analysing feasibility of the MCQ resource PeerWise, which has now been successfully implemented to first year students • Setting up eBiolabs each year and checking functionality of resources before the students access them • Presenting a short promotional video of eBiolabs to camera (which can be found here: http://www.bristol.ac.uk/ebiolabs/biochem/) • Reconstructing a very large scale-model of DNA to go in the teaching labs! Learning Intern
-
Apr 2012 - Jun 2012
From April to June 2012 I worked part time as a Learning Intern for At-Bristol (Now We The Curious). During this time I: - became more intimately familiar with the inner workings of At-Bristol - carried out engagement research - designed fun and creative activities for the Diamond Jubilee "Big Lunch" celebrations, - carried out an evaluation of "Urban Stargazing", the first of many adult-only evening events held in At-Bristol. Commis Chef/Plate Waiter (events only)
-
Jul 2008 - Dec 2010
Between my studies I worked at a variety of events work in the catering industry. During June/July of 2009 and 2010 I worked as a Commis Chef for the AELTC Wimbledon Championships. I have also had numerous plate waiting and bar work at events such as the Goodwood Revival, Goodwood Festival of Speed, and at the Goodwood Park Hotel. These helped improve my interpersonal skills and the ability to work quickly and efficiently, prioritizing multiple tasks in occasionally high pressure environments. Show less

Summer Studentship with Cellular and Molecular Medicine Department
-
Jul 2010 - Aug 2010
Techniques I used during the seven weeks included qPCR and COBRA (Combined Bisulphite Restriction Analysis) to determine potential links between methylation and expression in three selected genes using Wilms' Tumour samples. After initial supervised for the first few days while I got accustomed to the techniques, it felt good to have autonomy in a lab environment, as opposed to the pre-determined experiments in the training labs. It reinforced in me the importance of good lab etiquette, including sterility and cleanliness when working, sharing of knowledge and resources and how future experiments depend on the results of the last.
