During my time here, I went back to the basics with animal behaviour and learnt various other positive reinforcement training techniques whilst reinforcing what I had already learnt in the zoological industry. This also included lists of toxic and non toxic plant species for future enclosure design. Since then, many keepers from various collections around the world have requested and begun utilising. This involved the design, implementation and evaluation of various enrichment devices. Creating enrichment calendars for each species. These duties included the maintenance and cleaning of animal enclosures, feeding specialised diets and preparing medication to a number of species and preparing enrichment.Species work with included:Honey Badger, Sumatran Tiger, Indian Tiger, Amur Tiger, Snow Leopard, Northern Chinese Leopard, Clouded Leopard, Pallas Cat, European Grey Wolves, Barbary Lion, Dhole, Fishing Cat… During this time I worked along side a number of keeper staff and assisted them with their daily duties. I got involved in active field research with endangered species with the Mauritian Wildlife Foundation (MWF) (www.mauritian-wildlife.org) as well as seeing many of their other activities. This included a visit to the mountain camp where pink pigeon and echo parakeets are managed. Their long standing project on Ille aux Aigrette involves the endangered Telfair’s skink and the invasive Giant African Land snail. Further research is undertaken through beach surveys for marine debris working alongside Project Aware (http://www.projectaware.org/), Lagon Bleu & Eco-Sud (http://www.ecosud.mu/lagonbleu.org ) 2 local NGO’s. Further work included working on marine life biodiversity & abundance inside the lagoon snorkelling from a small boat. A new study on anthropocentric activity in the lagoon was conducted. Some work in the community with local groups included fishermen and data evaluation from the projects run by Lagon Bleu to see what could be used for further analysis and publication. We also had the opportunity to go whale watching with an eco-tourist company also actively involved in research on sperm whales which can be seen all year round off the west coast. Show more Show less
