I am part of Dr. Chil-Yong Kang's COVID-19 Vaccine Research Team as a research student. Using Dr. Yong Kang's recombinant vesicular stomatitis virus (rVSV) vaccine platform technology, I have been involved in the ongoing research of a second generation COVID-19 vaccine produced by the Kang Lab.Lab technique, skills, and training learned during the time include (but are not limited to):- cell culturing, assaying, and quantitation- bacterial isolation, transformation, experimentation- Use of column chromatography for purification- DNA extraction, quantitation, gel purification- Biosafety, WHMIS, and laboratory safety training - Virus transfection, infection, growth/replication, and quantitation1000+ hours of wet lab research conducted in the kang lab thus far. Currently managing the health ownership and lifestyle pillar of the On Canada Project (formerly known as the On COVID-19 Project). This includes overseeing research and content from our volunteers, providing feedback and direction, and proofreading our content before it is posted online.- Directed the vaccine rollout series in Canada, which provided credible information on the COVID-19 vaccination plan of all Canadian provinces/territories and how vaccinations can be scheduled. Due to the success of our team and network, we have been recognized by the World Health Organization and are now part of the World Health Organization Youth Epidemic Network (EPI-WIN). By targeting our content to millennials and generation Z, there is more participation from such groups for matters surrounding health, the COVID-19 pandemic, and Canada itself, which has grown our community to over 70 000 followers and reaching national and international audiences. As one of the associate researchers, I am responsible for researching/reviewing content for the On COVID-19 Content Research Team. This includes discussing the political, economical, social, and health influences Canada has made to overcome the impact of COVID-19. By creating content that is easily digestible and comprehensible for our audience, the On COVID-19 Project has played a huge part in providing accessible information for the community. Our efforts have been recognized locally and nationally through news reports and features. Within this opportunity, I had the chance to partner with Dr Felix Lee, Dr. Christina Booker, and the first-year chemistry department to implement changes to first-year chemistry courses. Changes include: - the addition of new course material - learning modules - interactive simulations - peer-building tutorials. As in-person labs are heavily impacted by COVID-19, our team needed to find alternatives that can emulate the in-person experience in an online platform. This lead to my major project of creating interactive lab modules, where we use simulations and user interactions to promote active learning in Chemistry 1301A labs. Using photoshop and e-learning softwares (i.e. Adobe Captivate, Articulate Storyline), I was in-charge of designing several prototypes of our ideas. After 2 months of researching, designing, and editing, our team finished 4 lab modules in total, with over 60 newly-designed lab questions. As this will be a new learning tool for Chemistry 1301A, we hope that students can gain valuable lab knowledge and skills even with the ongoing difficulties of the pandemic. Lecture content for Chemistry 1301A also saw some additions, where students can use our new problem sets to promote course engagement. With several research opportunities cancelled due to COVID-19, the team at WSRC is working on a series of research webinars, where professors and current research students discuss personal experiences, challenges, projects, and tips about research. - With my past experience in video editing, design, and animations, I was able to have a large influence on the structure, design, and quality of our promotional framework. - I have also re-designed the WSRC website, keeping the WSRC community updated with our current work and plans for the future.
