During this internship, fertility traits in potato plants were studied. The phenotypic data was combined with genotypic data to study genetic regions linked to fertility traits. From this data, QTLs for fruit set and berry set have been identified. This knowledge can now be used in potato breeding programmes. • Major thesis - Plant Breeding
      • Aug 2020 - Feb 2021

This thesis focused on early blight (caused by Alternaria solani) resistance in potato species. Wild relatives of potato cultivars (Solanum tuberosum) were screened for resistance by bio-assays. Additionally, the function of putative resistance genes were studied in wild relatives as well as popular cultivars such as Bintje, Désirée and Atlantic. This was done using stable transformants and transient expression. This thesis focused on early blight (caused by Alternaria solani) resistance in potato species. The aim of this internship was to obtain more knowledge about fruit weight genes in tomato. Subsequently, molecular markers were developed to detect genetic differences between large and small tomatoes.
