    • Vice President of Durham University History in Politics Society
      • Jun 2021 - Jul 2022

As Vice President of my University History in Politics Society, I was responsible for overseeing various branches of the Society to ensure that their work is compatible and cohesive. I was also responsible for communication between the Executive Members of the Society and the 500+ membership base. I have to liaise with the members of the seven sub teams within the society. For example, when organising the Society Ball, I had to ensure that the communication between the Publicity Team, Treasury and the Events Managers was strong. When we are publishing volumes of the journal, I discuss with writers, editors and journal designers to ensure that people are working according to agreed time frames. In order to maintain a quality output (including a journal, blog, podcast and events), I delegate tasks amongst team members, recruit new members when appropriate, and decide upon time frames to discuss progress. Member of the founding team and Editor for the Durham University History in Politics Society, a startup venture which is now a thriving society with multi-media publications. Alongside writing for and editing the work of peers and academics for our journal and blog, I communicated with contributors, other editors and academics to start a new publication. I also helped in recruiting a board of esteemed academics to advise and guide the journal.

    • Research Assistant for the Inclusive Learning Communities Project
      • Jun 2021 - Sep 2021

I was employed by the Durham University School of Education as a researcher for their Inclusive Learning Communities Project. I assisted in designing a survey to ask students about their experiences of inclusion and exclusion within Higher Education, with the ambition of creating a guide for best practice, including new research on the use of technology in learning. I recruited participants and conducted my own focus groups, through which I learned how to get the most from people in a research setting without breaching privacy or safeguarding guidelines. In writing the report, I understood the requirement for accessibility for multiple stakeholders including educational technology representatives, academics/ teaching staff, students, examiners and Higher Education Authorities such as University boards. I really enjoyed both the research process and found the outcome of contributing to such an important project highly gratifying Show less

My role as a Policy Researcher was situated in a time critical environment in which I was required to deliver at pace. Despite the demands of the role, I enjoyed working in an environment that was at the centre of helping people in my community, while being connected to national and international politics. My job had two main focuses: firstly, I was responsible for logging policy-related emails from constituents while taking note of the modal and most urgent concerns. Secondly, I was responsible for conducting research on the aforementioned issues raised by constituents, in addition to those covered in the Shadow Ministerial Brief of Faiths and Women and Equalities, including Faith Schools, Period Poverty and the relation between race and exclusion rates in London secondary schools. It was crucial that I delivered at pace as other members of the team were reliant on my work to formulate responses to constituents, these issues were time-critical in nature as some were relating to debates which were to happen in Parliament, and the MP was depending on my research to aid her in forming stances on lesser-publicised issues. I delivered at pace by keeping the bigger picture of those reliant on me and the needs of constituents in my mind. I developed my skills in knowing when to ask other, more experienced, members of the team for their guidance or expertise. I improved my ability to create overviews and assess the importance of less urgent issues to be addressed at a later date. As a result, this MP's office responded to the concerns of constituents very promptly and effectively. I was quickly promoted from a voluntary role to a paid position. Show less
