During the course of the internship, my responsibilites/tasks included: - Construction inspection - General office support - AutoCAD Civil 3D drafting - Data analysis with Microsoft office suite Per my construction inspection responsibilities, I was able to oversee a long-term project dealing with the renovation of the police station/municipal building in Clark, New Jersey and the improvement of surrounding roads and sidewalks. During an onsite visit, I learned about the differences between asphalt and concrete, as well as understand the purpose behind Detectable Warning Systems. Per my general office support responsibilities, I learned how to package proposal plans prior to plans being sent out to fellow engineers and workers involved in a project. Per my AutoCAD Civil 3D drafting responsibilities, I worked with the program for a stormwater management project on Ethel Road West in Piscataway, New Jersey. I calculated the impermeable and permeable areas for the area of interest for both pre- and post-construction plans. I transferred these calculations to hydrographs so as to determine peak runoff for pre- and post-construction plans, as well as to compare pre- and post-construction peak runoff. The data I collected was used to determine what further improvements could be made to construction plans to improve runoff rates. Per my data analysis responsibilities, I organized data for the Ethel Road West project using Microsoft Excel. And, I designed a Pipe Capacity" program in Excel that automatically selects appropriate pipe sizes (diameters) by inputting 2 or 3 specific parameters (related to the specific situation). Through this mentorship experience, I was introduced to the mechanics of AutoCAD, such as analyzing drawings and using features such as hydrographs. Also, I learned more behind the theory and math of stormwater management. Show less
