Martial Arts Instructor
-
Aug 2008 - Present
I teach martial arts as a vehicle for enhancing life skills and building confidence in students of all ages. I also prepare materials and set-up for all classes. The job requires a proficiency in working effectively with school-age children through adults of varying abilities and backgrounds. I coordinate community events to foster strong, positive relationships between students, their families, and instructors. This includes communication with external partners, documentation, and advertising. I organize student databases using Excel, proofread and edit documents, write student update reports, and handle phone and walk-in inquiries. I process merchandise sales using Quickbooks, organize inventories, and operate a cash register. The position demonstrates a high level of patience, enthusiasm, fitness, commitment, and attention to detail.

I took tree cores for Douglas fir (Pseudotsuga menziesii) and coast redwood (Sequoia sempervirens), mounted the cores, and analyzed the cores using WinDendro and traditional calipers under a dissecting microscope. I recorded measurements using Access, including incidences of false rings, resin rings, and suppression and release dates. Field work required hiking to sites carrying tools, sometimes during inclement weather. The data was collected to determine the role of restoration thinning on tree tolerance to drought in coast redwood-Douglas fir forests of Redwood National Park, California.

Plant-Pollinator Research Team Member (Eco Informatics Summer Institute)
-
Jun 2015 - Aug 2015
I participated in an interdisciplinary team of varying science and math undergraduates, collecting biological data and analyzing it using R studio. We recorded plant-pollinator interactions in meadows of HJ Andrews Experimental Forest for a Long Term Ecological Research (LTER) data set that will be used to model plant-pollinator networks and determine pollinator resiliency to a declining habitat. Locating plots involved operating 8-12 passenger vans on windy, ill-maintained dirt roads and hiking long distances, in most cases over rough terrain and inclines up to 55%, carrying backpacks with tools and equipment including a two-way radio. Data collection involved extensive periods of standing, crouching, bending, or stooping, capturing stinging and biting insects in a net, and identifying plant species. Lab work included preparing kill jars and pinning insects. I also designed and conducted an experiment on reproductive efficiency of specialist compared to generalist plant species, for which I wrote a manuscript complete with graphs and charts, and presented my findings at Oregon State University. Field work for this project involved using fuschin jelly to collect pollen grain onto microscope slides and lab work required long hours of close analysis of grains under the microscope.
