As a team leader for UNICEF on campus, I am responsible for leading, organizing, and coordinating our ‘School’s project’. This has given me experience in problem solving, working in a team and collaborating. The aim of this project is to take our workshops to local schools to raise awareness on UNICEF and the UN’s objectives. We have created workshops about human rights, refugee rights, right to health care, disabilities amongst other topics. I have taken a very active part in Model United Nations reseaMUN) where I have debated on pressing current affairs issues ranging from the China-Taiwan cross strait crisis to the missallocation of resources in the International Monetary Fund. The highlight of my MUN experience was representing the USA in the security council as it widened my horizons on not only the complexities of negotiating but also the power dynamics in an organisation that’s meant to be as neutral as the United Nations. I explored the ulterior motives western nations have when they offer aid to developing countries as well as the strategic importance of military bases. It has allowed me to look at case studies presented to me with a holistic approach.

I tutored French through the Warwick Language Society to university students. This taught me planning and organisation skills as I planned and prepared my lesson. It further improved my presentation and communication skills. I also learnt to overcome unexpected issues and solve unforeseen problems under time pressure. • Apr 2020 - Jun 2021

I am incredibly passionate about advocating for mental health awareness which is why I joined the wellbeing committee in my school. As a part of this role, I recently did an assembly on world mental health day and launched the Helloyellow campaign in school (as initially proposed by Young Minds). I have also taken part in raising awareness on how students can manage their physical and mental wellbeing over the course of this role.

I took part in a program at school called ‘Science Outreach’ where we went to major festivals such as WOMAD and BigBang and perform scientific demonstration with dangerous equipment such as 80 kg magnets and lethal substances such as dry ice and liquid nitrogen. This has taught me to be vigilant at all times as well as improving my speaking abilities and confidence.

      • Oct 2020 - Oct 2020

I was selected to take part in a 10 day youth board where I got the opportunity to voice my and my generation’s opinion on how businesses, particularly Bristol Water should progress in the future. I argued that businesses need to modify the way they operate in light of the new challenges they face (climate change, technology, the pandemic etc). I also had a chance to comment on the company’s mission statement and suggest any modifications that could be made. I also worked on ways that Bristol Water could reach out to young people and increase education around more efficient use of water. In addition, I was awarded a start participant award for my ideas at the end of the experience. Overall, this allowed me to get an insight into how a business operates, and got an opportunity to discuss my ideas, especially from the stance of a young person.

  • Tycoon Enterprise - Peter jones foundation
    • Bristol, England, United Kingdom
    • Managing Director
      • Oct 2019 - May 2020

I took part in a program called tycoon enterprise where we had to create our own business from scratch and complete on a national scale. I worked in a team of four where I had the role of the managing director and we created a jewelery line catered to teens. We sold at school events, christmas fairs and at other local opportunities which gave me customer services skills. I was in charge of coordinating other members’ roles and ensuring everyone was up to pace. I also created a weekly and monthly agenda to ensure that everyone knew what target they had to hit in that week and to help us keep on track for our goal. I gained invaluable leadership, teamwork and innovation skills as I led a business that aimed to make jewellery for a specific demographic. At the end of the seven months, we made a profit of over £200 and scored in top 15 nationally.

Volunteering in a local charity shop helped me develop my customer services skills primarily. I was responsible for arranging the newly donated items, rotating stock, and assisting customers in store. I also helped with the display, both around the shop and on the front window, and modified it according to the season or the holiday. Being around my managers also allowed me to indirectly gain skills such as professionalism. Volunteering in a local charity shop helped me develop my customer services skills primarily.
