PhD title: A designerly methodology for software development Supervisor: prof. dr. Imre Horvath Abstract: Systematic analysis of the field of industrial product development identified an evolution towards complex systems that request a high level of human-centeredness. To support this, new methodologies are needed, especially in the field of software development, which is an important aspect in complex systems development. The domain of interactive software application development could benefit from consumer durables development which intends to bring products closer to its stakeholders. Claiming this as hypothesis, during this PhD, from the perspective of a product design engineer, research was done to investigate how a software product can be developed and how stakeholder-involvement can be increased in the different steps of the design process. The research resulted in the development of a designerly stakeholder-oriented methodology with three elements: (i) Critical Collective Reflection, (ii) Modular Abstract Prototyping, and (iii) Surrogates-based prototyping. During the PhD research, an interactive and knowledge‐intensive design support tool was developed to test the developed methodology, which facilitates concept generation and trade‐off forecasting of smart ubiquitous energy saving in domestic appliances.
