The Leading Change Institute is a one-week intensive seminar held in Washington DC each June that is a joint venture of CLIR and EDUCAUSE. In the past six years, we have worked with more than 200 individuals drawn from mostly from mid-career and mid-level academic library and IT communities. Participants learn how to create collaborative communities that take leadership on critical issues, develop skills to set agendas for changes, and learn by doing through engagement with real world issues.

The CLIR Postdoctoral Fellowship in Academic Libraries program brings recent PhDs in the humanities, social sciences natural sciences into research, college, and special libraries to fill a growing gap between the academic subject and research skills needed for work in academic libraries and the training in library schools. As a leader of the program, I teach fellows at an intensive workshop at Bryn Mawr College, in monthly online synchronous sessions, and in face-to-face sessions at the Digital Library Federation and the Coalition for Networked Information conferences. Helped to conceive and carry-out a strategic thinking and design process that resulted in ARL 2015+, new directions for the Association in areas that were intended to bring coherence to the digital world of research libraries and influence the ecosystem of higher education. In five years, helped to raise almost $5 million in grant funding from the Institute of Museum and Library Services, the Alfred P. Sloan Foundation, the American Council of Learned Societies, the National Endowment for the Humanities, and the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation. Conducted a North American listening tour of almost three quarters of the ARL member libraries, co-conceived and carried out with full staff involvement a complete restructuring of the organization’s workforce, introduced a new financial system, rebranded the organization, renewed its web presence, and helped to launch a visioning process to reimagine the ways in which research libraries assess their effectiveness. Led the effort that resulted in the full-funding of the Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion program with membership dues. Show less

Oversaw administrative and academic computing, networking and systems, the language learning center, visual resources, multimedia services, and instructional technology. Reorganized the library and computing operations into a single unit called Information Services with a unified budgeting and personnel structure. Completely overhauled the college’s core computing operations and moved toward an unprecedented level of collaboration with neighboring Haverford College. Helped found the national organization for liberal arts college CIOs and launch a national survey instrument for tracking the performance of merged library and computing organizations. For the academic year 2010–2011, helped to lead the 125th anniversary celebrations at the college through publications, exhibits, course offerings, and an international conference on the past, present, and future of women’s education.
