I served two years of a higher apprenticeship at Express Engineering as a commercial apprentice. My first year was spent on the shop floor, learning CNC milling and turning, both operating and programming on small to large machines, as well as EDM and clad welding. During this time, I also attended Rolls Royce training school to complete my performing engineering operations in milling, turning and hand fitting. This allowed me to gain an overall understanding of how precision machined parts are produced, allowing me to go into my commercial role within my second year. My second year was spent within the commercial department at Express; I spent time in sales and contract management learning their processes, which then led to my final role as a member of the estimating department. I was responsible for providing quotations to customers in a timely and accurate manner. This involved sourcing the correct materials using BOM’s and specifications, planning machining operations including set up and run times, as well as any sub-contract work such as coatings and testing. During my time at Express I also completed an HNC in Mechanical Engineering through day release to Tynemet College once a week.
