A&E Facilities is a contract-cleaning subcontractor, carrying out final builders cleans, within the construction industry. Operating under the ‘A&E’ banner, clients include some of the biggest UK construction partners such as; BAM Ltd, Carillion Plc, Balfour Beatty Laing O’Rourke, Millers, Wates Construction and Interserve. Projects include new teaching academies, health centres, hospitals, universities and office complexes. Project values range from £5k - £1000k. Last years turnover was £618k . The role of Managing Director combines the management of both operational, and strategic sales functions. This includes initially selling to contractors, visiting sites and producing a quotation, negotiating prices, attending pre-start meetings and then project managing the team on site. I am also responsible for ensuring all Health and Safety legislation is followed, through risk assessments and method statements. Typically we will have four large sites running consecutively, with a team of up to ten staff on each site.

A&E Construction is a recruitment agency supplying temporary trades and labour to the construction industry. With an average turnover of over £1.5mil before the recession, A&E Construction was one of the leaders in its sector within the region. The business was started from the Yellow Pages…. cold calling small to medium sized construction companies both over the phone and face to face on site to develop new relationships. A&E Recruitment Ltd expanded the business and took on five members of staff. The role then changed to one of a manager motivating staff and making strategic decision s to continue the initial year on year growth. Up until late 2008 A&E were running at an average margin of £7K per week with 80-120 workers out on site. In the last three years due to the economic downturn having a major effect on the construction industry, this figure has dropped dramatically to around £2K per week with 30 workers out on site. 2010/2011 turnover was £473k.

I was one of 16 candidates chosen from 74,000 to take part in the BBC1 series “The Apprentice”. The selection process was a series of rigorous interviews designed to test the applicants in a variety of situations. Taking part in the programme was a unique and enjoyable opportunity and despite the editing I was shown to be a "down to earth" and credible business person. The experience is one people are usually interested in and I have found it is a good way to open doors to potential new clients.

Henry court recruitment was an established agency working within the construction industry supplying trades and labour on site. I returned to Henry Court as a sales manager overlooking two offices in Bradford and Blackburn. The role was to increase the turnover of both offices through business development, and managing the sales team of 5. It was during this time that the idea of A&E Construction Recruitment was born, as I had always dreamed of owning my own company. BBT is a global recruitment specialist with offices worldwide supplying temporary and permanent staff both in the Health & Social Care and Construction related sectors. My role as a senior consultant involved me placing quantity surveyors and project managers in interim and permanent positions within consultancies. My role involved networking to get CV’s, persuading clients to interview my candidates and then negotiating the final deal. Although I found this a huge change from temporary recruitment I consistently billed £10k a month, and was set to become a section manager. Despite this I made the decision to return to the cut and thrust world of temporary trades and labour recruitment.

I was chosen as one of 20 from thousands of applicants to be part of a graduate training scheme. I underwent a 2 week intensive training course at Cadburys main office and then took to the roads selling chocolates out of the back of a van to shops in the north east. The role was not as expected so I parted company after 6 months. I was chosen as one of 20 from thousands of applicants to be part of a graduate training scheme.
