After an application process, I was invited onto a month internship at Kate Woodcock’s research group at the University of Birmingham. I helped design a therapeutic video game for children with boarder-line personality disorder, that specifically targeted dichotomous thinking. The game involved judging the appropriateness of a junior scientist character’s reactions to several scenarios. My role was to write draft narratives for these scenarios and asses which reactions the character may have would be considered extreme or appropriate. This was fed back to the player and hence provided the therapeutic aspect within a gaming environment. Show less

I raised almost £1000 through part-time work and fundraising (including car washes and school events) to help fund a trip to Nepal, run by World Challenge. I was out there for a month, and spent time volunteering at a local school near Kathmandu. We painted classrooms, paid for bricks for a new classroom which we started the process of building (another world challenge team continued this work afterwards), and generally made the environment more safe by removing overgrown vegetation and large rocks from the pathway into the school, moving pieces of metal and filling in holes. We slept in the school itself so also got to spend a lot of time with the children and do some teaching which was really rewarding. Show less
