Malassezia furfur is a lipid dependent yeast and commensal that is part of the mycrobiota of skin of animals and humans. A high mortality rate has been reported in immunosuppressed patients and neonatal with lipid parental nutrition due to this pathogen. However, the interaction of the pathogen with its host is currently unknown. That is why we proposes Galleria mellonella as a new study model that allows to evaluate the virulence of this pathogen inside its host. This insect tolerate a wide range of temperatures, including human temperature 37◦C, also, the immune response against pathogens is similar to the innate immunity in humans and it has allowed the study of virulence and the activity of drugs in some yeast of great medical importance such as Candida sp. and Cryptococcus sp.. The aim of this study is to establish the infection model of M. furfur in G. mellonella. For this, M. furfur inoculum was adjusted to four different concentrations that were injected into G. mellonella to carry out a mortality test. Hemolymph analysis was done to observe the immune response of the larva against the pathogen and the death of the larva was corroborated using measure of fungal load to ensure that it was caused by M. furfur. The infection model of M. furfur in G. mellonella was standardized and this showed a possible tolerance to the pathogen at low concentrations. This study is a first approach that allows to study the host-pathogen interaction and the antifungal activity of M.furfur that will allow the treatment of patients who present bloodstream infection. Our results are similar to standardized models with Cryptococcus species where there was an activation of the immune response of G.mellonella and, in addition the virulence was proportional to the inoculum injected.
