Director Of Strategic Communications
-
Sep 2009 - Sep 2019
As SHIFT NC's Director of Strategic Communications, I had the challenging, dynamic, and FUN role of helping guide discussions about adolescent sexual health in our state. Whether it's helping our program staff communicate stellar results, helping healthcare providers market their services to teens, or helping policymakers understand data and the implications of their decisions, I found creative and effective ways to bust myths, challenge taboos, or champion information that can help young people grow up healthy. Highlights:- Led the effort to rename and rebrand the 30-year-old Adolescent Pregnancy Prevention Campaign of North Carolina as SHIFT NC. Worked with stakeholders to develop a mission, vision, and brand designed to better serve North Carolina youth and families. - Part of a core team that doubled the agency's budget - twice! Together, our team raised more than $30M for adolescent sexual health initiatives. - Created NC's first State of Adolescent Sexual Health Report and secured endorsements from 65+ organizations for a 10-year goal to reduce NC's teen pregnancy rate 30% by 2020. Helped launch an event - the State of Adolescent Sexual Health (SASH) forum - to provide an annual public progress report, and produced annual written SASH reports. - Launched parent- and teen-facing brands to help connect young people and their families to adolescent-friendly health services. These include The Playbook, a CDC-funded social marketing campaign to connect older teens to clinical services in their communities, and Prepared Parent, a mobile choose-your-own-adventure tool to guide family conversations about sexual health. - Co-planned the nation's first Sex Ed Film Festival. TIME called it, "either a shrewd way to reach kids who are too cool for after-school specials or the weirdest cult film gathering ever"- Worked closely with media to be a voice for adolescent sexual health. Trusted background source on sexual health research, trends, data, and policy.
