Bio
Alice Srugies
I worked with Elissa in different capacities – at first, as teacher in several courses she took in the programme Master in Communication as well as supervisor of her master thesis. Based on these positive experiences, I encouraged her to apply for a position as adjunct in the Master in Communication team and had the pleasure of working with her on this study programme for a period of one and a half years. Working with Elissa has been nothing but a pleasure and a very rewarding experience. She combines a creative and curious mind, being able to see the big picture (for example when developing strategies for student engagement), with a sharp eye for detail (providing thorough feedback on for example student assignment and reports), the gift of being a terrific writer of both academic and non-academic texts as well as the skills to coordinate and drive projects from programme level to Faculty level. Maybe more important than that, Elissa is a great asset to a team, the kind of colleague that fills a room with warmth and encourages a supportive, thriving work environment. Elissa has left the Master in Communication upon her own request and is dearly missed. I am happy to share more about my experience of working with Elissa upon request.

I shared teaching responsibilities as a co-teacher in courses primarily in organisational and strategic communication, and also provided supervision support for thesis students. In addition, I was involved in diverse aspects of programme development, such as improving student on-boarding, developing the programme's digital presence and strengthening student, alumni and external partner relations in general.

Substitute Teacher
-
Apr 2017 - Jul 2018
On the side of my master studies I worked as a substitute teacher at the kindergarten Barnlåten on a call-in basis. Working for the first time at a primary-school level, I discovered how my past pedagogical experience was useful in softly supporting the children in the educational objectives set for their age level. This position also supported me in diversifying my Swedish language skills. On the side of my master studies I worked as a substitute teacher at the kindergarten Barnlåten on a call-in basis. May 2014 - Sep 2016
I started at the Helsinki Festival as a production trainee of the Classical music team in 2014, and stayed onboard as a production assistant until the 2016 festival edition. During these years I developed skills and readiness to plan diverse types of processes from beginning to end. I was partly in charge of organising, coordinating, carrying out and evaluating events from smaller chamber concerts to e.g. a children’s mass event with 4000 8-year-olds. Most of all, the job measured my ability to react and adapt to new situations, to cooperate with people from a range of different backgrounds, to take individual responsibility as well as to work and communicate efficiently and cooperatively in teams. On a concrete level, I took part in e.g. coordinating schedules and logistics, hosting artists, taking care of other stakeholders, coordinating volunteers, working in collaborative projects with other institutions, supporting in communications efforts (e.g. editing programme leaflets, updating websites and social media), presenting on stage, among others.

Receptionist

Dec 2010 - Aug 2016
During my years as a receptionist at this family-owned boutique hotel in the heart of Helsinki, I came to learn essential intercultural communications skills when meeting people from all around the world. I loved both welcoming visitors to my hometown, sharing my favourite hotspots with them, and in turn hearing stories from their homelands. Overcoming language and culture barriers was an everyday challenge that I came competent in solving. In addition to improving my aptitude in customer service, I also acquired some basic administrative skills in booking, billing and hospitality management systems.
