The Master of Arts in Urban and Public Affairs trains students in public policy, urban studies, and grassroots organizing, examining ways policy and community engagement can effect positive change. The program combines graduate seminars in urban studies, politics, sociology, and public policy with hands-on experience in community-based research, policy design, policy analysis, advocacy, and implementation. Graduates are uniquely equipped to formulate policy and initiatives for more equitable and vibrant urban areas, inspired through thoughtful engagement with the theory and practice of social justice. In my Master's Capstone Project titled: "Planting Power or Planting a Paradox? Urban Agriculture, Gentrification, and Community Development in Oakland, California" I focused specifically on the issue of gentrification as it relates to urban agriculture and food justice programs in Oakland. Utilizing a community-engaged research approach, I conducted widespread community outreach and interviews. In addition, I produced detailed property value research and spatial representation of data using mapping tools such as ArcGIS Pro. With this data, I produced an 85-page report detailing neighborhood change around two urban agriculture projects in Oakland, and I concluded with a recommended framework for food justice-oriented urban agriculture organizations to follow in order to avoid the facilitation displacement in their respective communities.

48 Hills is San Francisco’s largest daily, independent community news and culture site, launched by the editors of the legendary SF Bay Guardian alternative weekly newspaper. For almost a decade, 48 Hills has covered local and global music, arts, nightlife, and cultural events from a deep and fiercely independent point of view, as well as reporting on vital news stories and issues, with a diverse array of community voices. In my role as Investigative Reporter, I provided intensive research support for an award-winning investigative report featured in the California News Publishers Associations’ 2020 Journalism Awards. I conducted property value research and interviewed influential public figures and policymakers in San Francisco. Our work on this project played a critical role in mobilizing a “Yes on Prop 15” direct action demonstration in downtown San Francisco.
