Research has shown that clients with both visual and intellectual disabilities have difficulties bonding and communicating with their surroundings. Especially in stressful moments these clients have difficulty expressing themselves. This results in either refusing any forms of communication or severe emotional or even physical rejection. Continuous miscommunication results in psychological problems and a declining mental health. Parents and caretakers do want their child/client to be able to express themselves without frustrations and seek for options to improve communication. As in these situations “regular” vocal or body language communication is limited technical means are being evaluated to enhance communication. My challenge in this graduation project was to develop a product that could be attached to the client in order to measure the stress levels throughout the day. The outcome of this project was a form fitting undershirt with sensors that can be worn comfortably during the seasons, together with an app for caretakers to get alarmed when stressed situations happen. This graduation project was conducted together with the BioresponsesandCare and Bartimeus to create a product to measure stress of severe disabled clients. https://www.bioresponsesandcare.nl/ Show less

As a student researcher, I conducted a research into the circular economy in the light industry. The research aimed to review and enhance the current standards of production and buying of circular lampshades in the light industry for architectural projects. When companies decide to buy circular products for the first time, they have to track down how circular a product is. That in practice means some kind of checklist to grade a circular product should be available and used. Unfortunately, most products aren’t (completely) circular yet. Hence, through interviews with different companies and clients it was investigated what they do to create circular products and how they grade the different products on circularity. While researching, standards and lampshades (graded current self-claimed circular lampshades used in architectural projects) were developed to determine the status of the light industry in the circular economy in 2017. As a result, this research can be used as checklist for companies to step into buying and making circular products as well as to prevent those buying so called “green washed” products. Show less

Together with a multidisciplinary team of five students we made a UI/UX design for the Brazil branche of Zeelandia. The challenge was to create an interactive platform for bakers who work with the products of Zeelandia. Our design got first place. Product design for the sport and health research department within the Hague University. This was an in school design challenge to find a way to encourage students and teachers to use the staircase more. Through testing at different schools, the results shown that the age group 14-24 rarely takes the stairs when an elevator is available. To combat this, we dispelled the reasons not to take the stairs by making taking the stairs an experience. This was done by researching motivators for the body to get active, in order words endormorphine. We combined the three senses; to hear, to smell and to see, to create this enzyme in your body. My role ranged from concept brainstorming, to prototyping, to staging the manufacturing process and marketing. Show less
