Elfyn was a postdoc in the ressearch group where I did my PhD. During that time his enthusiasm for chemistry, passion for helping others to reach their potential and extensive knowledge of synthetic chemistry was clear. I've since had the pleasure of working with Elfyn in the same department at AstraZeneca, albeit at different sites. Recently on a shared project it has been clear that the quality and energy of Elfyn's work is still high and he is well respected at the site where he works. I have always found Elfyn easy to interact and work with and I am very pleased to recommend him as a colleague and friend.

Dr. Elfyn Jones showed leadership, inventiveness and organisation all features rare and indispensable in research. During his stay at University of Sheffield he (i) contributed to the design of new projects (ii) devised independent research in the area organic synthesis (iii) wrote up independent grant proposals, (iv) supervised Ph.D. and undergraduate students (v) carried out his assigned research and wrote papers. Elfyn's strengths lay in his logic mind, meticulous attention to detail, determination in pursuing objectives and a thorough understanding of chemistry. Elfyn is a man of order and possesses a natural inclination to tidiness in practical issues and theoretical ones. He is an outstanding synthetic chemist and is completely reliable. • • Project management – Planning work and allocating resources based on goals and deadlines; ensure customer buy-in; direct report to customer via weekly written updates, TC’s and F2F; ensure on-track progress of research; modify plans according to results and/or changing customer needs. • Technical expertise – Synthetic route design (retrosynthesis and literature) and route prioritisation; route scouting; scale-up and development – providing an early process, demonstration batch and/or material delivery; manufacture from mg to Kg scale; tutoring less-experienced staff; authoring technical reports; updating customers weekly. • Company development –Instrumental in creating and developing process R&D capability and set-up of kilo-lab facility at ROT in Uppsala; creating business-case for purchasing new technology and contacting suppliers; influencing PR&D capabilities of Recipharm On-Target Chemistry in particular through initiating the Process Chemists forum about 3 years ago. Currently initiating the Principal Scientists forum to leverage in-house expertise and influence future company strategy. Show less

      • Extensive experience of all aspects of process development chemistry from pre-clinical to Phase 3, applying theoretical knowledge, practical and problem-solving skills to make a positive impact and drive the project towards its goals.• Member of the Synthesis Planning and Support Group at AZ - a small, specialist group providing literature/ theory supported solutions to AZ projects (e.g. synthetic route design and initial route evaluation; potential degradation pathways etc.), successfully leading to shortened laboratory studies, better background and rationale for decision-making and better process options.• Several successful examples of route-design & selection, process development & scale-up of the chosen route, transfer to pilot plant, other AZ sites and to CMO’s for manufacture thereby ensuring fulfilment of the global project plans. • Lead-chemist on several projects, planning, motivating and driving the chemistry activities of up to 5 MSc and PhD chemists, coordinating the various activities involved in process development, and representing process chemistry on the project core-team. In the research group of Prof. Varinder Aggarwal. • Successfully developed a practically difficult, catalytic asymmetric Diels-Alder methodology, turning the previously unreliable method into a robust, high yielding and highly selective process. • Successfully prepared a number of complex, chiral, sulphur-containing heterocycles for testing as asymmetric organocatalysts – first synthesis of the most robust and enantioselective structure to date. • Prepared several research proposals for submission to funding organisations. Successfully turned Prof. Aggarwal’s ideas into viable project plans supported by scientific literature and rationale. • Supervised 3 PhD students – mentored, gave feedback and helped them achieve their research goals. • Successfully managed the group (about 20 PhD students and postdocs) ensuring its smooth running; organised group activities (mainly research related but also social); ensured an atmosphere conducive to research productivity; took care of new students and postdocs. • Managed the laboratories and equipment ensuring full maintenance and order.
