As one of the recipients of the Trinity Employability Award in Social Action and Migration, I had the opportunity to interview for a summer internship with the Irish Refugee Council (IRC). At the IRC, I was given the chance to work in different areas across the organisation. Some highlights included conduction research on barriers to accessing human rights for asylum seekers (in partnership with the Irish Human Rights and Equality Commission and SPIRASI), editing a short film for World Refugee Day with the IRC Employment Team, and participating in youth workshops for mental and physical wellness with current and past international protection applicants in the Phoenix Park! Alongside my final year of study at Trinity, I collaborated with urban economist Dr. Ronan Lyons on a study of housing prices in Tampa and Pittburgh. My role was to assemble and clean large datasets using Stata and Excel. I was also tasked with running regressions and conducting a quantitative analysis of changing sale and rental prices over past 5 decades. During my ERASMUS at LMU, I conducted research using STATA under the supervision of Dr. Anna Abalkina. The topic of research is the internationalization of universities in Russia. I examined whether funding through the 5/100 Russia Excellency Project had a statistically significant impact on university performance according to three different world university ranking systems. In Ireland, asylum seekers can be stuck in the application process for refugee status for up to 15 years. They are detained in “Direct Provision” centers and denied the right to work permits, driver’s licenses, and bank accounts. Alongside the Movement of Asylum Seekers in Ireland (MASI) I am on the steering committee of the Right to Work Campaign and a member of the Policy and Research team. This involves planning fundraisers, gathering data, writing literature, and facilitating meetings and workshops. I also help run a social media account called Voices from Direct Provision that anonymously shares submitted experiences of asylum seekers to promote awareness and understanding of the issue. This internship was designed to transform students into racial justice advocates by giving us the tools to understand structural racism, identify the social determinants of inequality, and create a vision of collective liberation. Through building community, self-reflection, and discussion we reconciled with internalized privilege and oppression to become more intersectional in our future work.
