As the Summer School Principal I provided a safe, fun, and positive learning environment for staff and students. This position required the planning and coordination of all aspects of our Bilingual review classes, ESY classes in math and reading, and review/reinforcement Tier 2 summer classes. I was responsible for hiring a summer school team of teachers and associates for every class. In addition I worked to ensure that all staff were equipped with the resources and supports needed to offer a high-quality program to our students. The Summer School Principal is responsible for working with others to manage budget needs, coordinate the bus routes for students, the breakfast program, and class groupings for ESY and Review & Reinforcement classes. Keeping accurate records and being organized are essential to ensure that all students who require additional supports during the school year receive those supports throughout the summer. Maintaining positive and timely communication with the summer school staff helped to guarantee that student needs were met. Throughout the summer I was responsible for supporting teacher needs with discipline issues. I believe in creating a respectful and reflective environment for students, which is how I approached these moments. I am dedicated to creating a relationship with students that encourages open communication, trust, and mutual respect. I believe in timely communication with parents to maintain the school-to-home relationship that children need to succeed. I know that the care and thoughtfulness put into planning Summer School 2017 supported a positive outcome for students. Show less

    • Coordinator Curriculum and Instruction: Fine Arts and Physical Education
      • Jun 2015 - Jun 2017

In this position I supported the Assistant Superintendent of Curriculum, Assessment, and Instruction in a variety of administrative and coaching tasks to coordinate, plan, develop and monitor the successful implementation of the District 34 Fine Arts and Physical Education curricula. I ensured instruction across the district was aligned with the Illinois teaching standards, interpreted changes to the curriculum, and informed teachers and principals of the implications of those changes. I worked in collaboration with the Instructional Coaches in evaluating the effectiveness of instructional methods and programs, and developed effective job-embedded professional development to ensure teachers implemented curriculum with fidelity and integrity while focusing on continual improvement. In addition, I served as one of five teacher representatives on our district PERA Joint Committee. I was also responsible for K-8 PLC groups. In this capacity I provided support for teacher collaboration on common assessments, student growth plans, and educational support in the areas of curriculum and instruction. I planned professional development sessions ranging in topics from PERA support, General Music curriculum mapping, PE assessment training, and innovative technology for the classroom. From 2015-2016 I served as a member of the Arts Alliance committee for the Illinois State Board of Education (ISBE). We developed and recommended the new Fine Arts standards for Illinois. My knowledge of that work has helped us form a General Music curriculum map that was strongly aligned to these new standards. Part of my role as the TOA for PE was to ensure that we were meeting the requirements for new PE mandates for Illinois. This included working with teachers to ensure we had completed the necessary training for fitnessgram protocols. I led the work of our Concussion Oversight Team (COT), and finalized the district concussion protocols to meet the Youth Sports Concussion Safety Act. Show less
