Dec 2019 - Present
I work with a large variety of taxa in the Animal Encounters department. Responsible for animal husbandry, public education and servicing of enclosures to the highest standards. I have designed training plans using only positive reinforcement techniques to lower stress during veterinary procedures and currently working on injection training the Guianan squirrel monkeys for their annual vaccinations. I have recently become the primary primate keeper, responsible for the day to day management within the primate department. Show less

Ecology & Archaeology - Research Assistant
-
Mar 2017 - Sep 2017
I worked as a research assistant for Bournemouth University examining whether similar factors affect ecology and archaeology in heathlands. During this SERT I worked as a field research assistant, GIS digitising lead and site report editor. We studied 18 different heathlands that spanned Dorset and Hampshire, at each of the heathlands we recorded ecological surveys of the heathland and also recorded archaeological surveys of ancient monuments. Urban Pollinators - Research Assistant
-
Mar 2016 - Oct 2016
We surveyed sites dotted across Bournemouth with the intention to determine if populations of pollinators are incresing or decreasing. Planting seed mixes to create mini-flower meadows is an important initiative to make urban areas more pollinator friendly and our survey provides information on the current status of pollinators in Bournemouth urban areasOur teams conducted surveys between mid-May up until July 2016, around the time where the air would be both warm and dry giving pollinators a better chance to forage. We used quadrats to survey plots of ground and use the DAFORN scale and % cover for calculating the amount of ground and vegetation in each quadrat. We also carried out our pollinator count for two minutes per quadrat for species landing on flowering plants, or passing within the quadrat.During this research I have had the chance to broaden my practical ecological skills, through surveying wildflower sites, identifying pollinating species and wildflower species, photography, collaborative planning, and creating a printed poster to showcase our work. Taking part in this urban pollinator research has given me the opportunity to really apply my skills in the field, allowing me to develop further species identification knowledge and sampling techniques.Link for the website displaying our work: http://urbanpollinators.wixsite.com/dorsetbeepollinators/about Show less

Picos de Europa - Research Assistant
-
Jul 2016 - Aug 2016
During the Picos de Europa project, I worked as a research assistant with my fellow students in what proved to be a challenging, yet incredibly rewarding experience. My ecological abilities and confidence have greatly benefitted from this practical hands-on experience. This project is part of a long-term collaboration with Picos de Europa National Park, Spain, Bird Life International and the University of Leon. It investigates key ways in which environmental change is affecting ecological in alpine heathlands and forest ecosystems in the Picos De Europa. We tested the effect that deer grazing is having on bilberry as a food resource for e.g. Capercaillie and Brown Bear. We also tested what are the long-lasting ecological effects of mining for metal ores – do plant species translocate toxic metals in the soil to shoots where they become available to grazers? The results collected in these studies are being shared with Picos de Europa National Park to inform their ecological conservation management decisions regarding management for wild and domestic herbivore grazers.Link: http://www.cocreate4science.org/serts/?entry=318 Show less
