Eleanor spent her micro internship researching and writing about the refugee experience. She completed four pieces of work in one week. One blog article informing policy makers about issues of concern for the refugee community. A second article highlighting refugee artists who made a positive contribution to our society. She also participated in a podcast about her work with us. Finally, she successfully completed a foundation course in digital journalism certified by Reuters Foundation. This micro internship was organised by the Oxford University Careers Service.

Eleanor was nominated for Personal Skills Award (PSA) ‘Student of the Year’ by a panel of careers professionals due to an exceptional performance at interview, as part of the PSA assessment process. Eleanor was one of only 16 students (out of 99) who was nominated for this award, which is a fantastic achievement and a testament to her ability to articulate her skills and experiences effectively. Eleanor has immersed herself in extra-curricular activities whilst at Birmingham, focusing on positions which have had a positive impact on her fellow students’ experience. She has held committee roles within student groups in the Guild, such as Fundraising Representative for the Global Brigades Society and Social Representative for MedSoc Women’s Rugby. Within these roles she has supported and encouraged her peers, developing skills such as communication and organisation. Another way in which Eleanor has helped others is through her work as a Peer Assisted Study Session (PASS) Leader where she has supported student learning, delivering sessions for fellow Biomedical Science students. Eleanor has the ability to take on new opportunities and use her own initiative, this is evidenced by her commitment to the successful podcast ‘Law Talks’, which she co-produces. Throughout the PSA assessment process Eleanor has demonstrated a good understanding of the importance of self-reflection and personal development. I have no hesitation in recommending Eleanor, on behalf of the Personal Skills Award Team.

Undertook an in-depth exploration of the refugee experience, producing a comprehensive set of resources including: a blog-style writing piece, podcast interview, and infographic. In particular, I focused on the access to justice, as well as the life and accomplishments of Ruth Prawer Jhabvala – an award- winning artistic refugee. Sharpened my analytical abilities by evaluating legal documents and observing meetings with various charities. During the placement, I familiarised myself with the BDB computer system, broadening my technical skills. Observing the application of law within the charity sector provided valuable insights, fundamentally broadening my perspectives on legal matters.
