I spent the month of July shadowing Lord Moynihan as he undertook various parliamentary duties. Lord Moynihan’s primary concern during the time was pushing through legislation to do with the upcoming 2022 Birmingham Commonwealth Games that sought to ensure a charter which would codify provisions for sustainable practice which prioritised human rights and anti-corruption. Accordingly, I attended various meetings and debates with Lord Moynihan, learning a great deal about parliamentary process whilst doing so. I was also tasked with compiling some research for Lord Moynihan ahead of the proposed reform of the 2004 Gender Recognition Act, focusing specifically on the rights of transgender persons in sporting competitions, a highly prevalent and multi-faceted matter. My time at the House of Lords was incredibly interesting and I learnt a great deal about the internal intricacies of British politics under Lord Moynihan’s guidance. I left the month’s work experience with a fiercer desire than ever before to occupy a job which allows for opportunities to make meaningful changes towards building a more inclusive, kinder and conscious society. I have worked regularly at The Royal Oak pub and restaurant during periods when I have not been studying. My experience at the pub means I have good understanding about how best to manage a bar and deliver high quality service. On weekends (when the pub was busiest) I was often responsible for running shift which involved managing bookings, seating people and ensuring a smooth service, before cleaning the pub at the end of the shift. I am well-accustomed to busy atmospheres, performing under time pressure, and completing long shifts. The nature of the work necessitated constant communication between colleagues to ensure tasks weren’t being repeated and to maintain good cooperation between the front of house and kitchen.
