I was responsible for the day-to-day running of the biology labs and maintaining all the science labs around the school. I was also involved with school projects such as science week, updating the VLE (the virtual student network) for biology A and AS level. I also assisted with practical demonstrations and classes. The main project that I was involved with was looking at an inherited form of motor neuron disease. Our aim was to understand what happens in the cells of infected people and identify key proteins involved. I assisted with making up protein gels and western blotting. I have had some experience of tissue culture techniques. My main tasks within the lab were genotyping and helping with cloning experiments. I was also solely responsible for all orders and maintaining the lab and tissue culture facility. I was in charge of equipment maintenance and I am able to calibrate and maintain pipettes. I was responsible for many administration duties including updating and organising all existing databases. I was also heavily involved with updating risk assessment and health and safety processes. I was also been heavily involved in other inter- departmental and collaboration projects.
