9th Grade English and 12th Grade Speech Teacher
-
Jul 2015 - Jun 2016
As a 9th grade English teacher, I designed a differentiated curriculum for four 9th grade inclusion classes and one non-inclusion class. I worked with my students to craft effective paragraphs using templates and acronyms to simplify the crucial steps involved, and they composed research, comparative, narrative, and analytical essays using those techniques. I also utilized various forms of technology to reinforce grammar skills, literary conventions, elements of critical analysis, and deeper level thinking. It was also important to integrate nonfiction texts into units to promote intertextuality, and to emphasize the importance of real-world connections and creativity while still teaching standardized test skills. In addition, I analyzed Individualized Education Programs, attended conferences, and held meetings to assure appropriate accommodations were provided based on various student needs. As a 12th grade Speech teacher, I implemented both Indiana state educational standards and Ivy Tech Community College regulations in relatable and multi-faceted lesson plans. I used fiction and non-fiction to reinforce how to construct informative, persuasive, demonstrative, and special occasion speeches. To give students support for their job endeavors, I presented and informed students of career-related skills, including holding mock interviews and composing resumes and cover letters. I utilized technology to post assignments, rubrics and supplemental materials. Students illustrated these skills to give speeches using the organizational, effectiveness, and research tools we discussed and practiced. I also provided feedback to improve students’ confidence and proficiency while public speaking. Show less

Montessori Assistant Teacher
-
Jun 2013 - Jun 2014
As an assistant, I co-taught 20 students, aged 3-6 years old. I Instructed students in the acquisition of skills in the disciplines of language, arithmetic, science, culture, art, and practical life. Additionally, I led a group lesson once a week in one of the aforementioned disciplines, and often included physical activity to help maintain and reinforce multiple aspects of the Montessori philosophy. I also provided care for students regarding meals, hygiene, and first aid. While presenting lessons and assisting students in their intellectual endeavors, I practiced group control and management. My position included performing sanitizing and classroom maintenance duties, and I was responsible for the upkeep and cleanliness of the shelves, works, dishes, tables, and other academic materials. I also promoted school safety procedures by teaching problem-solving skills. Most importantly was my experience in navigating the dynamics of working with co-teachers, which has enhanced my communication skills. Show less

Senior Counselor
-
May 2009 - Aug 2010
As a camp counselor, I led a variety of educational and community-based activities. I guided campers in many volunteer projects, in addition to creating games for them to get to know each other, themselves, and their surroundings better. I was a Senior Counselor, and was responsible for overseeing the well-being and health of each of my campers, including ensuring their meals, hygiene, and comfort at camp. I also planned larger events for the entire camp with other counselors, and I practiced effective organization in my activities, and learned the importance of communication and professionalism with my co-counselors, superiors, and campers. I was also required to take leadership and safety courses, and my group management skills have certainly benefited from being proficient in both areas. One of the most important aspects of being a Senior Counselor was in creating an environment conducive to making campers feel comfortable away from home, a skill which requires empathy, understanding, and patience.
